6 x 6 oil on canvas panel
we had the best time in michigan! - gathered with old friends - ones i've known 50 or 60 years!! how bizarre is that?? and today is just scrumptious outside! - i am so lucky to have 4 of my 5 grands here for a giant sleepover - all but the youngest who's celebrating his 2nd birthday today. anyway..they're out in the pool as we speak with papper and jase and i need to get back out there! more later....
a daily musing about my family, my life, but mostly about art - how i will try to paint every day - even while my house is falling down around my ears and my five grandchildren are clamoring to paint with me. thank god my husband likes to cook and that he and nellie and ruby, our golden retrievers, have infinite patience. we'll see.....

"Self Portrait #1"
14 x 11 oil on stretched canvas
my very first ever self-portrait@!!! - since i didn't study art in school...(actually i'm a registered nurse..).. i was never required to do a self-portrait in school - something i'm sure all formally trained artists have done. one of my favorite artists, carol marine, posted her portrait and talked about something called david lobenberg's self-portrait "love in" and i wanted to give it a try. we had a group paint-out today in my friend jane's back yard - the lighting wasn't dramatic - i tried to stay in the shade pretty much since it was over 90!!! but little by little i think i captured myself.. sort of..with the girls' help, of course- along the way, my nose was too long, my face was too wide, my eyes were too close, my face was too long - so hard to get a likeness, especially while holding a hand mirror in 90+ degree heat!! i didn't paint in my bifocals which of course i was wearing..maybe i'll add them later when i have time - we have to get ready to pack and head north to visit friends in michigan for the weekend. no posting til next week! -

"Who are You?"
6 x 6 oil on panel
we had plenty of limes on hand for the weekend gathering so i thought i would use a few for my painting today - we had a wonderful time yesterday - celebrating an anniversary, two generations of father's day and of course joe's birthday - i have to say...the elmo puppet was his most favorite present of all -at least for the moment! the weather was hot but dry so swimming was the order of the day....and we had a wonderful meal to boot! - now on to the rest of the summer - i have good intentions of doing a self-portrait in the next couple of days - i've never done one but i have an incentive to get it accomplished before the end of june - stay tuned....

"Three Zinnias" NFS
6 x 6 oil on panel
here are a few zinnias from my garden - i don't know if i'll have the really long ones this year - usually i grow them from the seeds from last year's batch but i think it may have been too cold when i threw them around for them to germinate - i'll try again now that it's warmer - the flowers i painted yesterday are called stella doros (or doras) - i found that out from my golf buddies today - this painting was done alongside tillie and ollie as they worked on their own projects...always so much fun... as a post note...this painting has been presented to my surrogate grand neice for her 8th birthday...

"Spidey Crocs"
6 x 6 oil on canvas panel
please email sadiedavis7@comcast.net for purchase info
i found these crocs abandoned on a driveway in st simons. actually i don't know if they were forgotten or abandoned but from the looks of them, someone was a spider man lover! - (spidey as my kids and grand kids call him)...i didn't realize you could put little charms on your crocs but this little guy also loved baseball and i'm betting it wasn't long before he realized he left his shoes behind...
we're heading to the lake tomorrow for the weekend - home monday - i don't think we can get wifi up there but i'll investigate - i know i'll have trouble finding time to paint since it's a "work" weekend so i'll be back painting monday or tuesday. stay tuned....

"Tillie's Bear"
6 x 6 oil on canvas panel NFS
well...i received a commission of sorts today! tillie and oliver are visiting for the day and tillie wanted to paint along with me as i did my daily painting. while we were thinking about what to paint, she said:..."what about Bear?"
...so it started with bear and then we added tillie's crocs, and then we had to find a stunning background to play a part and she settled on this fabulous green and black and white polka dotted fabric.
...now bear is VERY old - probably as old as tillie and that means 6 and three quarters...so as you can imagine she, bear, is quite bedraggled - those are real blue stains that might have been ink at one time and tils wanted me to be sure and include those. she set it up just the way she wanted it and commented as i went along, all the while creating a fabulous painted flower pot and a gorgeous pastel drawing of her own.
...it was so much fun to have her here with me and orchestrating every move. i think she's going to love this special little painting for a long long time! it's signed "ganny" and it's all hers!

we had a great birthday party for my daughter yesterday - and then celebrated my friend margaret's birthday today and then i had to go out of town on an errand - and on my trip i saw at least 4 little signs for fresh strawberries....it's that season, you know...and that's what i love about living in a small town with wonderful produce fresh-grown all around us...spring just screams strawberries and on my trip back i just had to stop -(my car might have actually screeched to a halt!) i bought 6 quarts - gave some away already and don't know how i'll get through the ones i have left but they do make for some wonderful painting fodder. i may paint strawberries for the next several days - that is if i don't devour them all first!!!
