"Self Portrait #1"

14 x 11 oil on stretched canvas

my very first ever self-portrait@!!! - since i didn't study art in school...(actually i'm a registered nurse..).. i was never required to do a self-portrait in school - something i'm sure all formally trained artists have done. one of my favorite artists, carol marine, posted her portrait and talked about something called david lobenberg's self-portrait "love in" and i wanted to give it a try. we had a group paint-out today in my friend jane's back yard - the lighting wasn't dramatic - i tried to stay in the shade pretty much since it was over 90!!! but little by little i think i captured myself.. sort of..with the girls' help, of course- along the way, my nose was too long, my face was too wide, my eyes were too close, my face was too long - so hard to get a likeness, especially while holding a hand mirror in 90+ degree heat!! i didn't paint in my bifocals which of course i was wearing..maybe i'll add them later when i have time - we have to get ready to pack and head north to visit friends in michigan for the weekend. no posting til next week! -

"Who are You?"

6 x 6 oil on panel
we had plenty of limes on hand for the weekend gathering so i thought i would use a few for my painting today - we had a wonderful time yesterday - celebrating an anniversary, two generations of father's day and of course joe's birthday - i have to say...the elmo puppet was his most favorite present of all -at least for the moment! the weather was hot but dry so swimming was the order of the day....and we had a wonderful meal to boot! - now on to the rest of the summer - i have good intentions of doing a self-portrait in the next couple of days - i've never done one but i have an incentive to get it accomplished before the end of june - stay tuned....

"That's Hilarious!"

6 x 6 oil on panel

now this guys really looks like he's laughing! - too funny! - i'd love to visit abu dhabi someday - i'll bet these guys are everywhere and it would be so different from seeing them at a zoo ..or in the movies, of course - we're gearing up for a big family gathering tomorrow - another multiple celebration - father's day, of course, an anniversary and my youngest grandchild joe's second birthday. the pool is READY!!!!! - no post tomorrow - back in touch hopefully on monday...p.s...watching the open - great sloggy fun - it may go on til tuesday!! which i would love!

Blast From the Past- "Splashin"

14 x 11 giclee on canvas
please email sadiedavis7@comcast.net for purchase information

today was a bust as far as painting was concerned...but lots of fun otherwise. i had tillie and ollie this afternoon for ollie's swimming lesson - and then the minute he was done, it was down to play mario -so tillie and i invited the lovely children from next door over - they're from france and we call them "the frenchies"...anyway - they have a brand new baby and we're all very excited! - we had quite an afternoon in the pool with so much squeeling and splashing...at least i got a whole lot of yard work done i hadn't planned on - out to dinner tonight so no time to paint - i thought i'd post this little "Splashin" painting...i've sold the original but it's available as giclee on canvas or print on paper.

6 x 6 oil on panel

please email sadiedavis7@comcast.net for purchase info

so here's my next buddy - if you'll notice...he has a completely different grin and some funky teeth working for him - i think that must be how camels know each other..because they really all look so much alike....except, that is, for their grins!!!!

"My First Camel"

6 x 6 oil on panel
please email sadiedavis7@comcast.net for purchase info

my friend in abu dhabi sent me a postcard with a bunch of camels on it. i never realized what grinners they are!! this is a painting of just one of them - i'll probably paint them all - one at a time - and maybe a few together - they are so much fun!

"Three Zinnias" NFS

6 x 6 oil on panel

here are a few zinnias from my garden - i don't know if i'll have the really long ones this year - usually i grow them from the seeds from last year's batch but i think it may have been too cold when i threw them around for them to germinate - i'll try again now that it's warmer - the flowers i painted yesterday are called stella doros (or doras) - i found that out from my golf buddies today - this painting was done alongside tillie and ollie as they worked on their own projects...always so much fun... as a post note...this painting has been presented to my surrogate grand neice for her 8th birthday...

Monday, June 8, 2009

"Day Lilies" SOLD

6 x 6 oil on board
just home from the cottage - i understand the weather was wonderful here but it was certainly dreary up there! - we did get some stuff accomplished though - planted some flowers, worked in the yard - getting organized a bit - now back to work here - these are smallish day lilies from my yard. i think they have another name but i can't think of it at the moment - i think there will be lots of wonderful flowers to paint as the summer unfolds.....

Friday, June 5, 2009

"Kiss Me"

8 x 10 framed oil on canvas
please email sadiedavis7@comcast.net for purchase info

since i won't have my paints with me for the next few days, i thought i'd offer another "blast from the past" - i painted this last year and sold the companion piece at my gallery in indy...it should be a beautiful weekend in columbus and fortunately our kids will be here while we're gone so the grands can officially christen the pool for the summer. i'll be painting again next week so stay tuned!

Thursday, June 4, 2009

"Spidey Crocs"

6 x 6 oil on canvas panel
please email sadiedavis7@comcast.net for purchase info

i found these crocs abandoned on a driveway in st simons. actually i don't know if they were forgotten or abandoned but from the looks of them, someone was a spider man lover! - (spidey as my kids and grand kids call him)...i didn't realize you could put little charms on your crocs but this little guy also loved baseball and i'm betting it wasn't long before he realized he left his shoes behind...

we're heading to the lake tomorrow for the weekend - home monday - i don't think we can get wifi up there but i'll investigate - i know i'll have trouble finding time to paint since it's a "work" weekend so i'll be back painting monday or tuesday. stay tuned....

"Tillie's Bear"

6 x 6 oil on canvas panel NFS

well...i received a commission of sorts today! tillie and oliver are visiting for the day and tillie wanted to paint along with me as i did my daily painting. while we were thinking about what to paint, she said:..."what about Bear?"
...so it started with bear and then we added tillie's crocs, and then we had to find a stunning background to play a part and she settled on this fabulous green and black and white polka dotted fabric.
...now bear is VERY old - probably as old as tillie and that means 6 and three quarters...so as you can imagine she, bear, is quite bedraggled - those are real blue stains that might have been ink at one time and tils wanted me to be sure and include those. she set it up just the way she wanted it and commented as i went along, all the while creating a fabulous painted flower pot and a gorgeous pastel drawing of her own.
...it was so much fun to have her here with me and orchestrating every move. i think she's going to love this special little painting for a long long time! it's signed "ganny" and it's all hers!

"Basket of Berries"

7 x 9 oil on panel
please email sadiedavis7@comcast.net for purchase info

we had a great birthday party for my daughter yesterday - and then celebrated my friend margaret's birthday today and then i had to go out of town on an errand - and on my trip i saw at least 4 little signs for fresh strawberries....it's that season, you know...and that's what i love about living in a small town with wonderful produce fresh-grown all around us...spring just screams strawberries and on my trip back i just had to stop -(my car might have actually screeched to a halt!) i bought 6 quarts - gave some away already and don't know how i'll get through the ones i have left but they do make for some wonderful painting fodder. i may paint strawberries for the next several days - that is if i don't devour them all first!!!

"Just a Pepper"

6 x 6 oil on canvas panel

this is it for today - i went to the store late and as i was putting the groceries away i saw this perfect pepper....i'm not sure i captured the perfectness...but it was late and i was rushing....we're celebrating jen's birthday tomorrow so i may not paint but i am aiming to do much better next week! please hang in there and stay tuned....

Friday, May 29, 2009

"The Black Gate"

7 x 9 oil on panel

we had a painting confab at my friend nan's house this afternoon - four of us gathered to paint and i decided to do the neat black gate that leads into her back yard...i was in the sun so i'm not sure about the colors when i brought it inside - i picked the last two peonies this afternoon and put them in some water - very short season for those guys - bummer....

Thursday, May 28, 2009

Back home again.... "Fading Peonies"

6 x 6 oil on panel

we drove home yesterday through a couple separate huge rainstorms - are we ever going to be done with this rain??? - my neighbor says my peonies were absolutely gorgeous while we were gone - as were the beautiful purple flowers on a bush in the front that i don't know the name of..- and now all are gone...i think this is the latest in may we've ever been gone to georgia and i think this will be the last year for that!! - too much pretty stuff to miss -..anyway - i picked a few of the last of the peonies and took them up to the studio - i may do just one tomorrow - and then again, there may be some more peonies that will bloom - i'm new to this peony business - last year, they all blew off with a straight line wind event we had - sort of like a mini tornado...it's good to be back but as usual something is always amiss when we are tring to re-enter...this time it's no hot water..just as we're getting ready for our showers this evening..so we're heading to the hot tub!! -

sunshine and wifi

i changed the colors a little bit in this to make the painting more harmonious...

9 x 12 oil on canvas
here's another "kids on the beach" painting...

we awakened to sunshine today!!! - and wifi!!! - the night before last, we had a rain storm so loud and so long, the ground was sopping - too wet to golf and no access to internet - but today is another day!!! - i finished up some stuff yesterday and will post what i've done. probably my last post for a couple days - packing up tomorrow and the long drive back to indiana on wednesday...

Saturday, May 23, 2009

"Another Sunrise"

9 x 12 oil on canvas

here's another sunrise painting - when i take pictures of my stuff, i can see what needs to be changed - i'll work on this more tomorrow - got to play golf today - only got rained on for a few holes - we were actually thinking about packing up and heading home but we're hanging in there - a chance to play agin tomorrow...i'm thinking positive thoughts!

Friday, May 22, 2009

very quick study

6 x 6 oil on panel

my hubby gave me orders to hurry up....so this is a very quick study of a picture i took several years ago at our lake cottage in northern indiana...i may do a larger painting later but here's my daily...now on to golf!

"Moody Daybreak"

9 x 12 - oil on stretched canvas
here's a painting of a moody sunrise on st simons...this is a glorious place for sure. we're finally going to get to golf today so i must get upstairs and paint - we plan to let nels get wet in the ocean today and we have to do that early so she has sufficient drying time...

SUNSHINE!!!!!

another reworked painting - i think i like this better -
we woke up to glorious sunshine this morning!! - and wifi!! - so i'm posting early in case we lose it again...i worked on a couple previous paintings yesterday...i think they're better but sometimes i get too caught up...

Wednesday, May 20, 2009

wednesday - just so-so....

9 x 12 oil on canvas
i'm not sure about this guy either - just a daily painting to continue to exercise my muscles....getting tired if the rain...wanting to get outside....
11 x 14 oil on panel

i wanted this to be a sky painting...i don't think it read very well in the picture...after the third straight day of this nor'easter i think i'm getting a bit jaded...or stale..or soggy...

Tuesday, May 19, 2009

"Boatyard by the Beach"

9 x 12 oil in canvas

this is one of my favorites! - our third floor balcony overlooks this old junky-looking boatyard at the edge of the ocean and i really think i captured it - this is a morning view since the sun sets behind us - we have one gorgeous view in the morning ...that's for sure!! and now....it's time for some glorious gumbo and IDOL!!!! lyb

"Big Sky over the Marsh"

6 x 6 oil on canvas panel

another sky painting...i'm loving this - i'm not necessarily saying this is new for me but i'm getting back to the stuff i love....no matter how much i'd like to paint in beautiful layers, i just can't help piling on the paint!....another day of almost total rain - the wind has not stopped howling all day - on the third floor of our beach house, it feels like we're actually swaying! we managed to take nels for a walk around the block and this afternoon my hubby fixed a gorgeous batch of seafood gumbo while i painted. going to post this while i have wifi....

yesterday...so much rain...

9 x 12 oil on canvas

this is the other beach painting i've been working on - we'll see after it sits for a while - the mom actually had a yellow bathing suit on but the pose was not very flattering so i decided to put a little white dress on her. i think i may name this one "Shelling with Mom".

6 x 6 oil on canvas panel

this is of a single shell - no lighting so not very dramatic. it rained ALL DAY yesterday!! - i couldn't even get out on the porch to paint so i set up in the upstairs hall, hoping that the paint smell will dissipate by the time we leave...i'm sure it will - we're sitting in the middle of a nor'easter - winds up to 35 miles per hour - (so THEY say ..i think it's more!) i think we'll at least be able to get outside today for a walk - the rain has stopped for the moment but we'll see..

9 x 12 oil on canvas

this is one of the paintings i'm working on - more kids playing on the beach...i'm not sure this is working - there may be too much stuff going on and the color is what i saw..not necessarily the most harmonious for a painting. i'll let it sit for a while and get back to it.

TOO DARK

i just finished a painting for one of the galleries here but i can't take a photograph of it since it's so dark at the moment. only 5:15 and it's really very dark - very dark and very stormy! - nellie is beside herself!! we keep telling her how much she loves storms and lightning and thunder and just she's just not buying it!! - hope to post tomorrow!

"Three Shells..Sea Shells..."

6 x 6 oil on panel

i pulled these 3 shells out of a candle holder we have here - i think maybe tomorrow i'll focus on just one of them...after my daily painting and a good long walk this morning we headed out to play our first round of golf since we arrived on thursday. yikes!! - bad move! after getting called in 3 times for rain delays, we hung it up after 7 holes - and we were both doing well! - bummer...ah but tomrrow is another day...

"View from the Adirondack"

6 x 6 oil on canvas panel
this is the idea i had while i was sleeping - we have 2 adirondack chairs on the upstairs balcony here -kind of cool- but i placed this one out on the beach - looking out on the water - ...artistic license and all...i may try this again. i'm also working on a painting of 2 little girls playing in the water on the shoreline with their mom - i'll post that when i get finished with it. i'm thinking i may do some shells today - stay tuned...

Saturday, May 16, 2009

fast and loose NFS

11 x 14 oil on panel

in case we lose this wifi connection later today i wanted to get something posted this morning. this is the other fast and loose impressionistic painting i did with janet - i haven't touched this one - don't plan to - you can see a lot of the underpainting remaining....off to do some errands - i have a plan for my daily painting - thought about it in my dreams but i don't know if it will come off like a planned...more later.... as a post note..this painting has been presented to my surrogate neice as her wedding present. this painting was so much fun to do - i'm so glad it's going to a good home!!!

Friday, May 15, 2009

a painting from the communal dock near janet's

stuff from today...my daily painting - 6 x 6 - one of the sky paintings i plan todo - if this publishes i'll try and put some other stuff up - this glomming on to wifi is tricky....

Thursday, May 14, 2009

we're here!!

well we made it safely to st simons!! - rained half way and we took it slowly - got here in time for "bones" - still don't know if i can do this daily stuff but i'm going to give it a try. i will paint every day but i don't know if i can post every day -.......plus a little golf, of course.....or maybe a lot of golf....

Wednesday, May 13, 2009

off to georgia

here's another blast from the past - this is a watercolor i did many years ago and ended up donating it to our local "kids' commons" - i didn't get to a daily painting today but i'm all packed and rarin' to go!..taking all sorts of painting stuff with me - hope i can find a way to post! - as i was getting ready, i came upon more gorgeous sky photos that i've taken over the years - i think i may do a series of fast and loose skies - sounds like fun....

Tuesday, May 12, 2009

"Impending Storm over Satilla"

6 x 6 oil on board

please email sadiedavis7@comcast.net for purchase info

this picture was taken from janet's dock - looking back toward the treeline. it was the last night and the sky was turning ominous and i had to dash out there and take some pix - what a breathtaking view!! - i'm not sure i captured the majesty of the experience - i'll probably paint this several times until i get it right! we're getting ready to drive back down to st simons on thursday so no posts for sure that day - not sure about tomorrow as we're getting organized. but i think i can post the things i do down there - at least i hope so - my techno friend carolyn helped me today so i may be all set! - if i can't get wyfi down there i'll get back in touch in two weeks. lyb

Monday, May 11, 2009

too tired....

i worked in the yard ALL day! - planted everything - so i am tired!! - didn't have the gumption to head up to the studio so i thought i'd offer another oldie - this is for my father-in-law - it's called "love one another" and i love these guys!

Sunday, May 10, 2009

"Back to Nature"

6 x 6 oil on board

please email sadiedavis7@comcast.net for purchase info

this is from a photograph i took many years ago. i really like the composition. while i was outside photographing it, once again, the painting got taken by the breeze and blew over. i tried to pick the little stones out of the water but the sky will have to wait. you can't see them very well but they're there...for the moment... happy mother's day to all of us. lyb

Saturday, May 9, 2009

"Little Satilla River"

7 x 9 oil on canvas board

please email sadiedavis7@comcast.net for purchase info

ok here's the deal - i wanted to do a very spontaneous, very loose impression of one of the fabulous views i've experienced over these past workshop days...this is looking out from janet's veranda...sort of...as i said..."impression"....

Friday, May 8, 2009

check it out

this is one of nan's fabulous paintings - see how good it looks in this frame!
