a daily musing about my family, my life, but mostly about art - how i will try to paint every day - even while my house is falling down around my ears and my five grandchildren are clamoring to paint with me. thank god my husband likes to cook and that he and nellie and ruby, our golden retrievers, have infinite patience. we'll see.....

"Sushi Marie"
6x6 oil on panel
so this is Sushi Marie... gone to heaven now..for my friends Roberta and Tom...so here's what been happening lately... i had such a sore body for some reason on saturday...then i thought back..on thursday i drove to a tennis match in carmel..where we got our butts kicked!!.. they are so lucky to have so many gals to choose from..our second round, we had to face a pair of fresh recruits..who REALLY kicked our butts!!..then friday.. i stacked a half rick of wood that i made davey save for me so he wouldn't have to do it all.. then a long bike ride into a 20 mile-an-hour head wind..."it's ok honey..we'll have a tailwind on the way home!!"..then we played nine at harrison..we were thinking it very well could be our last chance with the weather changing!.. davey was scoring so well..one over after nine..and i kept telling him.."your decision whether we quit or go on.." he decided to quit with good memories.. he said he'd be so angry if he went 37-44 so we just sailed off into the golf sunset..i did ok as well.. after bogey on the first three holes, i ended up with a 41..not too shabby!.. so i guess i really used some serious muscles over a couple days!!..
meanwhile.. i continue to see my "Celebration" painting on the cover of LIFE magazine.. i snagged that image off the tv and worked several days on it before the magazine issue even came out!!..i guess that was a very memorable and iconic image..and hopefully folks will want to capture it for their favorite cubs fan.. christmas maybe?..http://susiegregoryfineart.com/workszoom/2218766

in progress...
so we've been celebrating for days after the cubs won the series!!..we've watched the game over and over and this scene of the celebration scrum on the mound struck me!!.. i told davey.."run that back!!".."I want to paint this!!".. so this painting has been in the works for several days..sneaking up on it.. and apparently great minds think alike since this image was just on the cover of Life!!.. if a tad different.... my piece is 36x36 and will take a while to finish.. and then i don't know what.. maybe make prints?..maybe not?...i would be interested to know who all might be interested...

MIA
6x6
oil on panel
so this is Mia...for a friend and gone to heaven now..i've been working on three pieces to enter in the Randy Higbee show..i'll post them soon.. still reveling in our trip to chicago with mike and judy..saw the first world series game in wrigley field since 1945.. the year i was born!!!!..doesn't matter that they lost.. well it does.. but just being there was so special..a few facts:..45,000 inside the stadium with some paying $1500 for standing room only...300,000 outside in wrigleyville..shoulder to shoulder no doubt!!...$250 cover charge to get in bars like cubby bear..$500 for a table once you get inside but we understand that includes all you can drink!.. (whoa!..lots of drunks..and we ran into a bunch of them on our way out!!!)..took us an hour to find a ride back to the ritz carlton because they lied about the cab situation and we couldn't figure out UBER..walked through an interesting area where they were celebrating halloween in a BIG way!!..we saw abandoned wigs in the street.. or maybe they blew off..it was a happening night for sure!!!..and now the cubbies are down 3-1..i'm thinking we may be winning tonight... stay tuned...

we've had quite a summer so far..back and forth to the lake a few times..rain storms..leaky ceiling..nellie, our golden, starting to have seizures..some good golf..some bad golf..just had to drain the whirlpool and start over..electricity went out a while back for a few hours.. air conditioner went out yesterday..both of our hard drives crashed..independently of one another but still...really????...i lost all my art stuff.. i had saved some photos in the cloud but all my documents, paintings, fodder for paintings..all gone..but with friends sick and dying...a little perspective goes a long way..oops.. just realized the air conditioner is STILL on the fritz! yikers....what next??.....

heading home..."Peonies and Pears"
this is another of the paintings I delivered to the white key gallery a few days ago.. it's 18x18 and another of the ones I set up in my studio...we played vcc again today..with ceej and craig..and although I felt like I played a lot better..my score was the same...odd...and the weather flipped from boiling hot yesterday to quite chilly at times today.. low sixties and when the wind came up..sheesh!!!..but it was still fun to be here and to get the summer started!..i am saying prayers for all the families of those who lost their lives today..what a senseless, horrible act of brutality and pure evil!..

i am so excited!!!!
ok.. so here's what happened today...first of all.. this is one of the paintings ready to go in the summer sale at the white key gallery..it's 40x30 and I absolutely loved painting it!!..today we played valpo CC..and remembered how hard it is to putt here!!.. you NEVER...I mean NEVER want to be above the hole...we felt like we were at augusta national!!...PLUS my range finder finally bit the dust!.. it has a nine volt battery and one of the terminals came loose.. for the second time...we took it to a jeweler and he managed to fix it.. but it broke again today.. I must be extra clumsy!.. so when we got back to the cottage. I got on the web and contacted the bushnell customer service folks..just to see where to go next. my new friend, john, was great.. he's going to fix me up!! and I couldn't be happier..there are good folks in the world and every now and then..something happens to reaffirm that fact!!!..

clean windows!!!!!
so I'm posting this painting of ben Hogan again...just because it's golf season...what I really want to say is how thrilled I am with my brand spanking clean windows!!!!!!...these guys were recommended to me by my friends michelle and charlotte...and they were so right!!..the service is hurtbird...(www.hurtbirdwindowcleaning.com 812-345-8389).. the two fellows, Michael and rick are hard-working, friendly, trustworthy ( important since we went on a long bike ride while they were here!!) and very reasonable.. I highly recommend them!! I only wish I could spend the next week totally spring cleaning.. there is so much more light in our house..or so it seems...love these clean and shiny windows!!!

nan's peonies
16x12
oil on linen
so after golf on Tuesday I went to my friend nan's house to pick a few of these gorgeous deep rose peonies!...I was unfamiliar with this type..i'm mostly used to white and pink but these are fantastical!!..I had them set up by Wednesday but haven't had a chance to get up there to paint til after we got the yard done...getting close!...so this afternoon I found them almost fading.. petals falling.. .. so i painted them fallen petals and all...wanted to post this ..but I may revisit it and work on the petals a bit more.. but all in all I think I'm happy with it!!

second peony painting
so this is 20x16.. I turned the vase so we're seeing the short side of the rectangle...I have been busy around here...yard work.. a bit of golf...and more yard work.. so I haven't been able to paint for the last several days...I picked more peonies today...white ones from nancy, the peony lady..(with permission)...gorgeous deep rose ones from my friend nan's yard...and soft pink ones from my friend marjie's yard...she's gone to michigan and is not able to appreciate them so.. I will help her with that!!!!!.....hope to get back to the studio in the next day or two... it may rain for the next ten days.. so that's LOTS of painting!!!
Sunday, May 22, 2016
so here's my first peony painting
so this is 18x18...I fiddled so much getting this set up.. pears?.. no pears?..leaves?...this first one I turned the vase lengthwise..if that makes sense...I just filled the vase to the brim and also stuck one pink peony from my own yard in there!...these are so gorgeous.. I did these on Thursday and by now the blossoms are really falling apart.. it's just a shame that peony season is so damn short!!

can't wait!!!!!
I don't know why this photo is so dark!.. but I am super encited..(as my kiddoes used to say)..here's what happened:..i almost persuaded myself to golf today...but it was a tad chilly this morning..and then it got gorgeous and it was already too late to join the girls..so I got busy around here..planted my six upstairs flower boxes and weeded and planted my zinnias in the circle in the back that used to be our whirlpool...(some of you remember those days...)..then on our daily bike ride we happened upon a yard just covered with white peony plants.. I mean COVERED!!!!... the lady of the house was just getting out of her car and of course I asked her if I might come back later and pick a few for painting purposes.. this time I got the go-ahead!!..unlike the poppy lady..but that's ok..so we finished our ride..stopping at krogers for yogurt for the girls and cilantro for our tacos...while there we totally JAMMED up one of the express lane stations..they were trying to charge us $101.81 for one avocado.. I think it had something to do with my entering our phone number while Davey was scanning..it thought we had 81 of them!!..anyway.. we scurried out after alerting the lady and averting our eyes from the angry stares from some of the shoppers...I digress..i couldn't wait to get home and right back to the peony house!!.. I took a fast count.. she must have more than thirty large bushes and I cut from all over so as not to have it be too noticeable..i chose 16 opened blooms and 5 buds..when I couldn't roust her at any of her doors...i left my card under the windshield wiper on her car..i thanked her for allowing me to use her gorgeous peonies for a few paintings I have in mind..now I am torn.. yard work?..peony painting?..yardwork?...nah!!!!!.. I can't wait for tomorrow!!

poppy tryptic
so here's a photo of the tryptic I've been working on..each panel is 40x16..this photo is taken in my kitchen so the lighting is not so hot!..thinking I may be done but mulling it for a while..the rain stopped long enough yesterday to go play some golf..very brutal rough and horrid greens..but not too shabby for early days..actually hit some good shots along the way..tomorrow I'm done with tennis for the year..and then it's on to golf golf golf...and maybe some painting thrown in there too!..after I get my flowers planted, of course.....

back in the studio....yeah!!!!!
ok.. so I've been very busy since we got home.. really worked on my house..dinner party a huge success..thanks mostly to the chef!!..and we got the house organized in the meantime!!.. so we were riding our bikes yesterday.. we passed this yard with a whole mess of poppies.. I was drooling of course!!..love me some poppies...so later, after I retrieved paintings from the eye place..and thanks to them for the opportunity for the last two years...they will soon be moving next to the fire station...anyway.. I swung by the poppy house..armed with some scissors and water and a business card...I rang the bell...the lady who answered was lovely.. I gave her my card so she wouldn't freak out.. told her I was planning some poppy paintings and would she mind if I took some photos and perhaps cut a few here and there...she said she wouldn't mind if I photographed but they were only blooming for a week and she'd rather I didn't cut any!... fair enough!!.. so I took several pics..and then started this tryptic.. 40 inches high by 18 wide I think..you can't tell a lot since it's in the beginning stages but i'll post more tomorrow...having lots of fun being back in the studio at last!!!!

Visitors' center opening...
"Storm"
17x17 oil on board
so we got home Monday... harrowing trip...came upon an overturned car where no one could have survived!!... makes you think about how fragile life is and how fickle time....been very busy since..got a little exercise at tennis Tuesday..worked on the house.. went to have a meet and greet with the mayor of Bloomington Wednesday morning....worked on the house...you get the picture...yesterday I dashed over.. there were three honorees..best of show, peoples' choice won by Dawn.. and best photography won by Bob.. I have to get their last names from gabe..it was a quick trip over and back..and then...worked on the house...we are having a small dinner party here on Saturday..and I have no housekeeper..every time i ask someone they say their gal has a waiting list.. so...we're able bodied and boy have we been working!!.. just the main floor..no one is allowed upstairs or in the basement...but it really doesn't matter.. these are good peeps coming and they really wouldn't care.. but it's a great excuse to get moving around here and shape the old homestead up a tad!!..tomorrow i will probably head to tennis again or..if it's gorgeous.. I may head to greenbelt!!!..anyway.. tomorrow night is the opening for our show at the visitors' center..there are six of us and I'm really anxious to see it!..the reception is from 5 to 6:30 and I hope to see some peeps if you're out and about!!..

Ok.. We had a great time, buying things here and there...trying to forget the bad golf we played the last two days..looking forward to the two-day tournament we have staring us in the face!!!!... But life is short and so is the memory of a golfer.. And WE WILL RULE!!!!!!!..stay tuned!!!

"Her grandmother's peonies"
24x18
Oil on panel
This painting is one of several in a show at our visitors' center...the opening reception is april 29th and the show runs til the end of june....come check it out!!.....Ok...so i need to fill you in on this place...our island..the one we've been coming to for forty years...all of a sudden feels a bit strange...we drove by our old house..not really sure if we should or not..but decided to get it out of the way and then we'd never have to go down that street again! ...they have totally redone it..no table to sit around out on the upstairs porch..we played lots of games and had lots of food and cocktails on that table..gone...but there's a big wooden swing should one feels the urge...saw a peek at one of the triple bunk beds in the twin room...they did a marvelous job on the outside flora..new bushes, walkway, etc...but...we dont need to go back...
Now..back to our rental...we arrived yesterday and spent about an hour trying to figure out which condo was ours.. Wrong house number..no key..actually the key was in the back with a punch code..but the back yard was gater and locked..thank heavens a neighbor came to our rescue..this place is clean..and most importantly dog friendly...and that's about it!... I would have posted yesterday but we had to use my iPad to stream stuff on the tv.. Uverse...we get ten
Channels..four of them infomercial challels and one of those is in spanish...the thermostat

On the road...
48x24
Oil on gallery wrap canvas
So here we are in marietta, georgia...sipping a scotch and savoring our safe journey from columbus to here!!!!.. Getting out of dodge was not that easy..as it turns out...last night i was doing one more load of laundry and went to throw it in the dryer..oops..it never started!! It filled with water all right..then nothing!..so i spent what felt like hours hand wringing towels and sweat pants, etc...did i mention hand wringing???....got em all dried but now....are they clean or dirty?..they spent some time in soapy water but didn't get rinsed...such a quadry...but on to the packing...i always get accused of over packing..there's a very old saying among good buddies.."be heavy...travel heavy..."...dont remember how i ever came up with that one...But i do have issues...it may have something to do with my inability to make a decision...or wanting to have options...weather, maybe..?..i do know davey retore his shoulder trying to get my bag out of the car when we went to bandon dunes...so there's that...ok.. Back to packing the car...we have a bar that goes across the back..window to window..to hang stuff on..we already had our golf gear..davey's stuff..some of my stuff...but then I had a few more things i thought i might need...you have to know what happened!!!!...yep..broke...my husband is a saint!!!.. He was in the kitchen.. Preparing MY dinner...and had to come out and fashion a jerry rigged duct tape thingy...which actually worked for a while..til i tried to move some of the stuff so i could see better (I do most of the driving..)...broke again!.. So then we glued it and duct taped it and then wired it...and we almost made it past louisville!!!!...so everything's lying in a heap back there and we don't even care since we are on VACA!!!!!!..so this is another painting I dropped off at addison's bakehouse yesterday...art is on the back burner this week.. All about golf and dogs..we were just thinking this may be the last time they get to make this trip...so we want to make it the best ever!!!.. Add friends to that mix.. Some here.. Some not able to be here...very bittersweet...

Addison Bakehouse
"Summer's Coming"
36x36 oil on gallery wrap canvas
so time has passed.. we had one hell of a time getting into and out of the atlanta airport.. we figured we could have driven it in less time and we'd have our car with us!!.. as we were driving to augusta in our rather pricey rental (apparently there are no cheap rentals during masters week!!)..we were passed by a small bus with the words "Atlanta airport to augusta" emblazoned on the side!!!.. a shuttle service!! who knew??.. we looked it up on line and yes.. would have saved us a bunch.. but we don't agonize..bucket list right??..we never used our car from the moment we arrived since there was a shuttle to and from the hotel..and lovely food everywhere..did I mention?...we have been so busy since we got home....but I need to chat about the Addison bakehouse!.. about 2 weeks ago we had lunch there.. a gathering of gals who hadn't seen each other in a while.. this place is perfect for that.. wonderful food...relaxed atmosphere..just lovely!.. this was only the second time I'd been there..even though it's been around for a few years now..the first time we could barely get a table and this last time we were able to make reserves since there were six of us..if you've not tried it..it's really great!!..they cater..have evening events..and they actually have delicious baked goods!!..ok.. so on my way out, I noticed there was some art on the walls and took a chance..asked the owner if she was interested in more and gave her my card..she got in touch later that day through my website..and sounded really excited..i took a few pieces in before we left for the masters..this painting..which she helped me name.. is now hanging behind the bakery counter!..a few others as well..so that's my fun news!!.. I also delivered my paintings to the visitors' center for the three month show..the opening reception will be the 29th of this month....and managed to get over to the venue to see the art and soul of Bloomington,, I couldn't attend the opening for that since there were wind gusts of close to 50 mph!!.. so I've been a busy girl..i'm really looking forward to just getting away and relaxing..golf, reading, walks on the beach, this will be the first time down since we sold our house..and the first time I won't be doing any painting while I'm there..odd but I think in a good way..I do plan to deliver several pieces to simon's and possibly gynn art while we're there..
Heading home...
We had a great day yesterday!.. The weather turned out to be delightful...very warm in the sun..wind picking up as the day went on...we parked our chairs near 16 green..thought it would be perfect.. It was amazing to see all these empty chairs set up..we heard later that people pay some of the workers to go in and set them up first thing in the morning.. It's remarkable..no one bothers your chair..someone may be sitting in it upon your return but they get right up and move on...so we wandered a bit.. Checking some of the early action.....then trundled over to amen corner.. Not a big crowd to begin with..we watched all the early groups go through..we saw two most amazing things at 13...as you all know..depending on your drive you can go for the green in two..for instance..jordan was on in two and barely missed his eagle putt so birdied to go to five under (i think) ...anyway..ricky hit his drive into the woods ..then hit his second into the gallery on the right..not a good shot but possibly all he had from where he was...so the crowd stands back and he hits a horrible wedge into rays creek..takes a drop..then skulls one over the green and proceeds to three putt from there..the dreaded snowball..to put it kindly..then we watched duffner pull his second shot into the azaleas..took a drop.. chunked one to the side of the green (not a pretty view from where he was..)..and then chipped/putted in for par!!.. amazing!!..I had to save this since we were leaving for the airport..i'll post this and then more later..it's actually Wednesday and we leave Friday for Georgia.. lots to chat about..

Practice round
Still no photos.. We left our cell phones in the room.. Took our cameras.. One of which died just as i was geared up to photograph some drives on the 18th...we discovered jordan, zach, duff and jimmy walker a few holes earlier and followed them a bit.. And I was set to get some driver swings but ah well.....got a few shots of swings all through the day..did a ton of walking...did i mention yesterday that if you are in the atlanta airport and you have a choice of taking the shuttle or walking from your gate to the baggage claim...USE THE SHUTTLE!!!!.. We kept thinking we would come upon it...but NO!!!!...anyway..i finally got my fit bit working and according to the read out i exceeded the 7500 steps i was supposed to walk today by twelve and a half thousand!!!.. Do not know if that's possible..but it sure felt like it!!.. And once again we were totally blown away by the elevations!..so many hills.. Up and down...these pros have to be in such great shape to walk this course five straight days!!..we had a great free breakfast at the special hospitality place with our package..then had lunch on the course...chicken sandwich, egg salad sandwich, 2 bags of chips, a diet coke, a beer and a water for fifteen bucks,,,,... Can not beat that!..we are heading to a dinner with our group this evening and already have our badges..."Badges???.....we dont need no stinkin' badges!!!!"... For tomorrow.. So we dont have to show up at the crack-O!!...i got some sad news today... Found out our fiend vicki has gone to heaven.. Blessings on her family..

Augusta...
ok..no photos yet..we drove right by famed magnolia lane but of course it was blocked!! It looks so much bigger and longer on tv!!..nothing comes across fom this course..the hills and valleys..you just dont know til you see it in person..it's been 23 years since we drove down and bought tickets at the gate for the tuesday practice round.. Or maybe it was wednesday..we saw the magical par three course..an absolute jewel..but this much later neither one of us remembers if we actually saw anyone playing on it!!.. I swear we did!!.. I Do remember watching jack and arnie and gary playing together and i got lots of pics..also all the golfers were supposed to get a photo op and we saw a bumch of those..including our own indiana boy fuzzy!..we are all set for the par three tomorrow.. Hope to take some photos with our camera tomorrow but not sure i know how to...and now i have to quit and bone up on some masters reading!! Stay tuned.. Ps.. Watching jack's amazing win in 86 on golf channel.. All golfers know where they were on that day...

WOW!!!!!
so proud and humbled to hear that my painting "sample Gates" has won best of show in the first ever juried exhibition at the Venue in Bloomington, Indiana!!.. and I couldn't even be there!!.. I was planning to head over after attending a celebration of life for a good friend..but there were wind gusts of 40-50 mph!!..that road to Bloomington is just too scary to be traveling with high winds!!..the weather was so bad that I got a call from my neighbor in Valparaiso telling me one of our trees had fallen in the back yard..across her driveway and almost taking out a car in the neighbor's yard next to that!!!.. we have to spend the next day figuring out what to do..insurance-wise..who's responsible for clean-up..who will pay the deductible..(US!!)..then Tuesday we head to augusta for the masters...practice round on Wednesday and first round on Thursday!!..wish us good weather!!.. but meanwhile I am thrilled to be so honored for my "Sample Gates"!!

it's that time of year again...
so this is a very rough start on a new horse painting.. don't know if you can tell but it's large.. 36x36..when it gets to be derby time, I think "horses"..but this year I'm not doing derby horses..just horses.. I have a few in mind..hope I can get a bunch accomplished in time for them to dry before the derby!!..maybe 3 or 4?..heading back up to my studio tomorrow before we head to indy for a tax meeting and then dinner with good friends mike and judy and ben and cindy...stay tuned!!

"Sample Gates"
18x24 oil on canvas
Happy Easter!!!...I'm thrilled to announce that this painting of the Sample Gates in Bloomington, Indiana has been accepted into the Venue's first ever juried show entitled "Art and Soul of Bloomington". there will be a reception on April 2 at 6 p.m.... i was really hoping I would have to miss it because we were following the hoosiers to the final four...sadly, they ran into a buzz saw in north Carolina...four three pointers by one guy in the first five minutes??... really??....and they weren't a good out-side shooting team??? really??...ah well.. that really simplifies out lives a bit because we were going to have to figure out how to get from texas to augusta for the masters!!!.. we are so excited!.. going for the practice round on Wednesday along with the par three tournament on the prettiest little piece of property you could imagine!!...then we'll be there for the opening round on Thursday..no cell phones allowed at all.. camera only on Wednesday so we're breaking out our cameras..we went for one day in the early nineties..saw arnie, jack, and the boys.. long before tiger's time..the whole place is so green..even the food, which is very reasonable, is served in green wrappers..and so quiet!!..plus you just can't possibly understand the elevations from the view from the tv cameras..
very happy to finally deliver a long-awaited commission to my friend jan on Friday..she has been so patient with me and I think she really likes it..she says she will think of her grandmother every time she looks at "meme's peonies"..thanks, jan, for enjoying my work.. it means a lot!!

"Shiloh"
6x8
oil on linen panel
so this is Shiloh...another doggie gone to heaven...what's extra special about this piece...he reminds me so much of our beloved rufus...who died in 1992...he was ever-present to help our kids make their way through the trials and tribulations of high school!!....plus.. shiloh looks a little bit like rake..whose name was "rufus" when my friend judy found him in the want ads in the paper..a good companion to our cubby..a golden-doodle before there were golden-doodles...who went to heaven in 2000...rake died in 2001 and we got Nellie, our oldest golden, in the fall of 2001 so...she helped raise our two oldest grands..willie and Tillie..nels will be 15 this year and she has managed to stay young with the addition of ruby in 2010....a very bossy and brash golden!!..boy we love our animals, don't we?? who's with me????
